National Childcare Demand Survey
World Bank / AfDB / Government of The Gambia
Overview
In The Gambia, the scarcity of formal childcare significantly impedes socio-economic progress, particularly for young mothers. Under the World Bank's RISE Project, 2M Corp conducted a comprehensive national survey assessing childcare demand across urban and rural areas.
The household survey comprised seven modules: household characteristics, existing childcare arrangements, early childhood development assessments (CREDI for ages 0–3, AIM-ECD for ages 3–6), willingness to pay, social norms and perceptions, time-use patterns, and facility-based childcare assessment. Average interview duration was 2–3 hours per household.
Qualitative data collection included key informant interviews with government officials and service providers, and focus group discussions with beneficiaries of childcare services, young mothers, and community members. All instruments were translated into local languages with electronic CAPI collection.
Impact
The survey generated the first national evidence base on childcare demand in The Gambia, addressing the intersection of childcare access, women's economic participation, and children's early development to inform cross-sectoral government investments under the World Bank RISE Project.
